What is "non-strong"?

The blue book makes multiple references to "non-strong" meanings.

Does this mean the hand may not meet the definition of strong, or that it isn't guaranteeing a strong hand?

Look at this hand:

I would consider it suitable for an intermediate 2S opening, but it meets the strong criteria of "13 HCP in two suits containing 10+ cards".

Would it be allowed as an intermediate 2S opening?

Non-strong means not "strong" where strong openings are definedTh in the glossary.

The hand has 13 HCP in two suits of combined length 10, so meets the definition of strong.

    Edit:

Sorry - I missed the point. "non-strong" refers to agreements or even parts of regulations - an allowed "non-strong" meaning can include strong hands.

  • I think the definition of "strong" determines what hands may be described as "strong". It doesn't require that all hands which satisfy the definition can only be opened with bids described as "strong". I don't think there would be a problem with opening your hand as an intermediate 2S - in fact the Blue Book Glossary defined Intermediate as "(2-level opening bid) 10 - 15 HCP"

That's what I expected but it's always good to check!
