Bidding query

Me partner and I play strong and 5. Last night, I was sitting West, and with North the dealer, it went pass, pass, 1 spade, I am sitting with a 12 count and AK to four spades, and overcalled 1NT, my partner explained that this was 15-17, and I said it was 11-14 in the protective position. Who is right please?

  • Hi, The strength of your 1NT overcall is by agreement with your partner (and often depends on the position)
In the bidding you describe, (you are now in the direct position) so 15-17 points would seem a reasonable agreement to bid 1NT.
You say you are in the protective seat, but that’s not the case here. If it had been North who had opened 1S, followed by 2 passes, then you are in the protective seat, as, if you pass the auction will finish. In that instance, your 1NT bid of 1NT is commonly agreed as say 11-14 points.
    Hope this helps.
    Kind regards Steve.

Thank you for your speedy reply. I obviously got this one wrong, but at the table, 1S passed out, down 1, would have been a bottom for us, but my partner, thinking I had 15-17, bid diamonds which was passed out for a top for us. So, wrong bid, right result. Once again, thank you.
