I have assumed that a bid is when a game is being bid, during the auction, and a call is during play and yet I frequently see questions about a call during the bidding so when is a bid a call or the other way round
All bids are calls. Calls which are not bids are pass, double, redouble.
From the definitions in the Laws of Duplicate Bridge 2017:
Bid: an undertaking to win at least a specified number of odd tricks (tricks in excess of six) in a specified denomination.
Call: Any bid, double, redouble or pass.
Although players sometimes talk of calling for a card in the play, the laws usually talk of naming or designating it.
