Incorrect card played by dummy

Towards the end of a hand Declarer leads the 10D LHO discards and declarer calls for a card from dummy. Dummy ruffs with the last remaining Heart in dummy and RHO discards. Declarer then plays from her own hand to the next trick and LHO says you won the last trick in dummy.

Declarer then says she asked for the 8S, at which point director was called. LHO and RHO opponent said they could not recall what was asked for but did not mention at the time that the wrong card was played, but Dummy said ‘yes’ you did ask for the 8S, so why play the 10H.

Law 45D1 says: If dummy places in the played position a card that declarer did not name, the card must be withdrawn if attention is drawn to it before each side has played to the next trick.

Clearly in this instance LHO can not play to the next trick as it’s a lead out of turn by Declarer. So does Law 45D1 still stand as LHO can’t play to the following trick without accepting the lead.

Or would 45C4b come in to force as a loss of concentration by declarer?

Or is it just a matter of deciding if declarer asked for the correct card, which puts the director in a difficult position as defenders say they can’t recall and Dummy who played the wrong card says declarer asked for 8S?

  • D1 applies. Both sides have not played to the next trick. It is likely that declarer did not call for a trump if declarer led from hand to the next trick, so we believe declarer.

Dummy's play is corrected. RHO can change their card. If RHO changes their card declarer can change their card led to the next trick; otherwise declarer lead to the next stands (if legal).

  • LHO could very well follow to a lead out of turn in they chose to, and players often do. But they haven't in this case, so as Robin says, we can apply D1 and correct the card. I would view declarer trying to play from hand as evidence they don't think they called for the ten of hearts.

Why did dummy play the wrong card? You can overthink that question, probably some small mental error.

Usually because dummy is following the play and anticpates declarere ruffing on table.
