Fixing a ClubPairs scoring problem from home

Last night one of our inexperienced TDs made a couple of errors using ClubPairs: they forgot to mark the missing pair when there was a half-table and they did not receive all the results from the Bridgemates. The club computer is locked up at the club, but I was able to rectify the problems from home as everything is shared using Google Drive.

I have made a 20-minute video of what I needed to do to resolve the problem. It is a little technical, but hopefully it is clear enough for most club scorers.

A key to my method is nothing is changed, or lost, from the club computer until everything is rectified so it remains a useful backup device.

Happy to answer any questions on our setup for those who make it to the end :)

Cheers

Paul

  • Great video, Paul although it would be too complex for some users.

At Bolton BC, we use TeamViewer with permanent Remote Access and leave the Club PC on all the time, so you can connect and work on the Club PC. We have found that simple and reliable (& free). There are some other Remote Diagnostic Support utilities eg Preston BC uses AnyDesk.
Actually, I am surprised you dont have problems with your shared database on google drive? Many years back, they used a Dropbox and that definitely caused problems?

I wasnt clear why you couldnt do the Pianola upload direct from the program?

On the two issues, it is likely that the users left the Bridgemate screen before all results were received. The fix would have been to simply return to the Bridgemate screen on the night. But you can always retrieve results from the Database as you indicated - Create Database > Resume Session > Read All Results.

Missing Pair - Again your procedure is correct - just ensure you have 'Retain Results' ticked. They could have corrected this during play by 'Update Movement' ensuring its done from the right round.

Suspicious Scores - Its much easier/quicker to go into Bridgemate > Other Functions and Print Travallers. That shows the hands and traveller results so much easier to check.

You can use the Administration > Fault Reports > Email Fault Reports to send the essential data files by Email.

Note version 30 ClubPairs has a new options page for BM3 usage which is just getting to market in UK.

We do not own our premises and so we cannot leave the club PC powered on.

We've not had any problems using Google Drive with EBUScore. This might just be luck since we have a small number of tables. The BridgeTimer software did have an access conflict with the Bridgemate database last week but it handled the crash nicely but lost permanent connection to the database until restarted. Perhaps any failures are silent and the next time it tries then it works.

The event needs to be handicapped by Pianola, so we have to check the 'Apply handicap' option in the upload. I have not tried putting the handicaps into EBUScore and seeing if Pianola does the right thing. We would also need two handicap files depending on the competition (mp, cross imp).

    Thanks

Unlikely to affect us in the short term.

  • A quick check suggests that handicaps are only available for matchpointed events and, as far as I can see, it is not put in the XML output.

I have not checked whether Pianola would understand a handicap in the XML.

  • Bolton BC includes a handicap in the XML file eg

    2
    NS
    -6.44
    24
    ......

and you will see the Bridgewebs results show both gross and handicap displays.
