Comparable Call 1N - 1S

East opens 1N, South passes, West bids 1S.

Can West replace by 2S? (Note 1N-2S would be 11HCP for this pair)
Can West replace by 2H as a comparable call? (Note 1N-2H is a Transfer for this pair)

  • Given it's an insufficient bid, 2H is the next bid upwards that also shows spades. So would be allowed on that basis.

It includes a number of hands weaker than 1S so probably wouldn't be comparable, but that's an academic point here.

2S, not really, just a completely different bid to a 1S opener, although I suppose some 1S openers might bid 2S it would usually not include hands with a 4 card major, which would go through Stayman.

  • North could accept the 1 spade bid (always give them the option when explaining the rules)

Agree with James - assuming 2H is the lowest call that shows spades:

Not really relevant in this case, I think, but a call that shows hearts and spades is a subset of a call that only shows spades - provided the strength is in the same range.

2H is not a comparable call since it might be made on weaker hands. It is allowable for other reasons.

2S is not comparable since although the denomination bid is the same, the denominations SHOWN differ.

A comparable call might be 3 spades if it is played as natural and game forcing i.e. with opening values.
