Insufficient bid

An insufficient bid of one no trump was replaced with a sufficient bid of two spades before the director was called to the table.

Left hand opponent wished to accept the insufficient one no trump.

How should things proceed from there please?

  • Randhl - the Law you need is 27C Premature Replacement.
If the Offender replaces his insufficient bid before the director has ruled on rectification, the substitution stands UNLESS the insufficient bid is accepted.
This is what seems to have happened in your case.

  • Note that if the orgincal bid is accepted, law 26 (withdrawn call) applies to the (now withdrawn) 2S bid and there may be lead penalties if offenders end up as defenders.

  • Thanks Jeremy that second bit was what I needed to know

  • Also follow up question one director thought that the offenders partner was silenced for the rest of the auction another thought they could bid but the spade bid was unauthorised information, which is it please?

If the insufficient bid is accepted then there is no 'partner must pass'.

If there is a premature replacement, but the insufficient bid is accepted then the premature replacement is a withdrawn call and creates unauthorised information.

  • Thank you, all clear now
