Revoke - Questioning

East is declarer and are playing 4H's. Mid game South plays a Heart West follows suit and North plays a Club. West says "no Hearts north" (asking North if he has no Hearts to prevent a possible revoke).

Question 1. When one's partner does not follow suit is partner allowed to ask - "none of that suit p?" to prevent a revoke?

Question 2. When opposition does not follow suit is a member of the opposition allowed to ask - "none of that suit ops?" to prevent a revoke?

Question 3. Should we encourage a situation where, when anyone does not follow suit someone asks - "none of that suit Mary?" to prevent a revoke?

  • The first two are dealt with under the law on establishing revokes, specifically

Q1. Yes, anyone can ask partner

Q2. Yes, with the caveat that dummy is not allowed to ask a defender.

If you do ask there's a risk of creating UI, since the implication is you didn't expect the discard.

So Q3 is a bit problematic. A situation where someone always asks whenever someone shows out doesn't seem ideal, it'd quickly become tedious and might slow the game down. Also would unlikely to be observed all the time so you'd still have UI issues.

My own recommendation is to trust partner not to revoke unless there's something genuinely fishy about the hand, to take an extreme example if two people revoke you may well know one of them has revoked.
