Should we announce and alert this?

Playing with a couple of partners, a jump in a new and higher ranking suit than partners opening bid shows a traditional weak 2 opening type hand 6+ card suit and around 6-9 points - so this should be announced as natural and non-forcing. Makes sense.

However, a jump in a lower ranking suit shows 6+ card suit but 0-5 points. Up to now we have been alerting both types of jumps, but it seems that this should now be announced as natural and non-forcing. That does not seem to be sufficient to my mind (ops probably expect an invitational hand for 1S - 3C. So, do you think that we should announce this per the summary, or should we alert and announce, or should we just alert, or should we announce but with extra information?

  • The regulations don't allow for announcing and alerting together, but they do allow for extended announcements so that's what I would do.

  • To clarify: the regulations Gordon refers to are the EBU regulations. Which regulations (as opposed to laws) should be adhered to in any given event are determined by the Tournament Organiser. In a club session, the tournament organiser is the club. If your club prefers to use its own announcing and alerting rules, it is perfectly entitled to so do.
