No alert on Puppet Staym.

Your help is very much appreciated.

North opens 2NT ( 20 -21 bal. ) they play a special partnership agreement.

The auction is as follows;

                    --         2nt              p         3cl !       p 
                   p         3d !              P         3h         p
                   p         3nt               p         p           P

3cl ! : ( asked ) Puppet staym.
3d! : ( asked ) 4cM /s

3h = ( no alert ) 0-4 sp ( in CC )

E makes opening lead of the D7 and contract is made.
At the end of the contract E calls Td complaints that " 3h was not alerted as 1-4sp .. Otherwise I would have led
a sp and contract would have been down.

Questions

1) Should E have asked the meaning of 3h so as to protect himself before the initial lead , as he is holding 5c sp
2) would it have made any difference if E had had 6c or even 7c sp ? ( not asking the meaning of 3h )
3) How would you rule on the contract ?

The 3H bid really only shows between 0 and 4 spades? It seems they are playing something that isn't Puppet Stayman. I did play Muppet Stayman some years ago but have forgotten it, but I don't think they are playing that either. It seems like MI. I'd want to know more about their agreements. Do you know what the 3H bid says about hearts?

I modified the following version. ( Final game bids are always made by the opener when responder is looking for 5cM ,and is interested in slam )

Version B)

2nt 3cl Puppet st.
3d = 4cM/s
3h= 5h or 3h with no 3csp
3sp= 5c
3nt = 3sp-2h ( exactly)

in both versions ;

2nt 3cl Puppet st.
3d = 4h or 3+ sp or both 3h = 0-4sp
3sp = 4h
3nt = 4-4 M
4cl/4d = natural

2nt 3cl Puppet st.
3d = 4h or 3+ sp or both 3h= 0-4sp
3sp = 4sp 3nt = no 4sp

If responder has 5sp-4h

2nt 3cl Puppet st.
3d = 4h or 3+ sp or both 3sp =4h
3nt = no 4h 4h = 5csp ( transfer)

or

2nt 3cl Puppet st.
3h= either 5h or 3h with no 3csp 3sp = ask ( 3+h )
3nt= 3h-2sp
4h= 5h
