21 board movements

As well as a slow return to face-to-face bridge, we're finding that some people also want to play fewer boards.

What is recommended for 21 boards on 5 or 6 tables?

Looking at EBUScore, the best choices seem to be M38 for 5 tables and M41-6 for six, leaving out the last round. But leaving out the last round switch doesn't feel right.

Are there better movements? And, if they are not already in EBUScore, what is the coding for them?

Many thanks

  • 5 boards a 5*4 mitchell might work, admittedly that's one less board than the 21. 6 tables can play a full mitchell for 11 rounds of 2, if that works.

21 ties you in to 7 * 3 board rounds, which is going to be some kind of partial Howell, double hesitation for M41-6. Which is awkward for those numbers, I can't think of a better suggestion than yours offhand.

Yes. For 5 tables, a Mitchell would do the job. But not really suitable for 4 1/2 tables.

Two board rounds can be comparatively slow with a small number of tables (less easy to move before everyone has finished), so I'd prefer seven 3-board rounds for 6 tables.

  • I would use a Double-Hesitation Mitchell for 5 tables and a Hesitation Mitchell for 6. You will need to enter the movements before you use them for the first time.

Is there a guide on entering movements in EBUScore? I faiul to decipher all the code.

  • Here's an example of how to enter the second of these. See if you can do the first using this as a model.

  • Alternatively put this in your PSUserMovements.txt file

I didn't realise that you could use this for input!

    Many thanks.

  • "some people also want to play fewer boards"
So presumably there are a number who want to play the same number that were played prior to clubs closing, obviously this may have varied slightly dependant upon table numbers.
Will not these players feel short changed if their normal 24 / 27 board session is reduced to 21 boards ?
If players are concerned about a late finish ? maybe start at 7.00 instead of 7.15 or even 6.45 instead of 7.00

Life is a compromise. AGMs give members of large clubs the opportunity to raise these matters and for a consensus to emerge; in small ones people can gather after a drive and discuss it.

  • We have a challenge on a Saturday morning where players start getting hungry at 12:30, and where numbers have dropped off so that we all to often get 4 and 1/2 tables to do 20 or 21 boards. Solution seems to be a double hesitation, but I can't find one in the EBUscore standard libraries. This seems to work:

...with a sitout somewhere. Life was much easier pre-pandemic with higher numbers and more tables.
