This came up in a club duplicate

North opened 2 clubs which East doubled.

South, not seeing the double, bid 2 Hearts, which was alerted and explained as three controls (correct explanation). In fact South meant to show two controls.

North then bid 3 hearts (natural) which South then passed for a poor score. (At my table I psyched a 2 Heart overcall of the 2 club opening and went six off undoubled)

Is South allowed to see the double

Comments

  • It depends.

If South's attention is drawn to it by anything his partner says or does (inclduing the alert and/or explanation) then no.

I'm unsure what happens if opponents say something like "is that different because of the double". I suspect it becomes Extraneous Information which may make the board unplayable.

    Otherwise yes.

    At least that's my understanding.

  • This question of Extraneous Information has been raised here recently, but I do not think that anything that is provided by the deliberate action of an opponent comes into this category. It exists for things that are accidentally revealed by another table or before the auction starts. Anything told to you by your opponents during the auction is authorised.
