1D - (1H) - X

My reading of the blue book is that the double needs to be alerted, although I’ve not witnessed this at the table. But I assume that’s correct.

I was taught that this does not necessarily promise four spades, but partner can be justified as bidding as though it does. Does this still require an alert?

  • This sequence may be an announcement: "spades".

    • If 1D(1H)X is a transfer to spades showing 4/5 spades, and 1D(1H)1S denies spades, then double is announced.
    • If 1D(1H)X shows 4 spades, and something in the unbid minor (clubs) then this is "takeout" and is not alerted/announced.
    • If 1D(1H)X shows 4 spades and say almost nothing about the other suits then it should be announced.

The last option is the modern treatment of a "takeout" double but few players announce.

The EBU Regulation Committee meets on Monday (23 March) and this issue may be resolved in new rules on alerting/announcing, which will be effective from later in the year.
