Home Scoring and other IT questions

New laptop - no names appearing automatically on Bridgemates.

We use EBU Score with Bridgemates (V2), and EBU numbers to identify players. The Bridgemates do not now identify the players names, though we have a work around to write the names back from EBU Score.

In EBU Score .. Bridgemates Scoring .. set BCS options ... BM2 The Players Names Name Source is set to Player & EBU Names table, which appears to be the default, and is how the old PC was set up, where this all worked.

Can someone suggest what might be wrong, or just what I can check to try and identify the problem.

Thanks

  • This seems to be a common issue.

Sometimes, the problem is getting the Bridgemate Program to use the Access Database file created by the
Download EBU Database button. EBUScore uses by default c:\EBUScore\BMplayerdb.mdb as that Access Database file.

There are a few steps to get this sorted.
Click Download EBU Database button to get the latest EBU Database into the Access Database file on the PC.

On the Bridgemate >Admin, click Setup File Location button to use that file (i.e.c:\EBUScore\BMplayerdb.mdb). This ensures that the Bridgemate Control Program knows where to translate entered numbers. Note the action of clicking the File Location button IS NECESSARY - it writes it to BCS shared registry location. (dont assume its already set even if point there)

Finally use Bridgemate > Set BCS Options > Bridgemate II name source accordingly (eg Player Names then EBU Names table) which tells EBUScore to expect Player numbers, or EBU numbers or both.

These steps may seem over complex but are necessary because the location of the Access Database file
was never standardised for all scoring programs. It's also a consequence of the flexibility for clubs
who just want to use Player Id number entry (usually 3 digits max) rather than the longer EBU numbers.

Another 'fix' is to set "Disable PID for Name Entry" in Player Database > Player Management.

The reason this 'fix' works is as follows:

Normally, Clubs use either a Club Player Number which the program loads into BCS Player Number Table
or an EBU number which is in a separate EBU File (c:\ebuscore\BMPlayerDB.mdb) maintained by the EBU. The BCS Name Source setting instructs BCS to search either the BCS Player Number Table or the EBU file or both in order.
The problem comes when you are trying to use EBU numbers but have not set the BCS Name Source accordingly
or dont have an EBU File available.

If you have supplied EBU numbers in the Player Database, then the 'Disable using PID for name entry'
ensures those supplied EBU numbers (rather than PIDS) are actually planted in the BCS Player Number Table so BCS will identify them. It is primarily intended for non-EBU organisations who want to use NBO numbers but haven't supplied a separate EBUO File. (This commonly happens in other Countries eg australia where they dont have an 'NBO' file but they want to us 'NBO' numbers for ID)

Hope that helps - The good news is that once sorted, you should never have the problem again!
