Fine and split scoring

I wonder if you could help me. I am an inexperienced TD. I on Tuesday TD'd a competition in the club. There were a number of course which I quickly resolved however in the midst of all this I was called to a table where lead card was not accepted. I believe it was around halfway through the session with time constraints I did not have a printed copy of the hands and I decided to switch off the validate lead card. On looking at the hands in the particular board I suspect that the board was switched 180° at a particular table.

One of the more experienced TDs has suggested that though two pairs prior to the table that called for the lead card error should be fined at something like 25% of the number of match points allocated for the match which I think was 14. This would require a 3.5 match points for each pair at that table.

Also mentioned was split scoring which I don't understand because looking at the hands there is no material difference between east or west playing the contract and all the other tables subsequent to the switch were in similar contracts so I'm not sure if it is relevant to split score

Am I correct or am I an error? Many thanks.

  • Do you mean the board was played in the wrong orientation — so that North became South, East became West, and so on?

If that’s the case, I would allow the score to stand and I don’t think a procedural penalty is necessary. Just remind the players to double-check the board orientation in the future.

  • Yes. The boards were played in wrong orientation and made no difference to scores. Thank you for your comment
  • The description makes it seem more likely that the hands had been returned to the wrong pockets, in which case the board needed to be scored as two different sub-fields using the Fouled Board procedure. If a different hand had become dealer, the results would not be comparable.

  • Thank you Gordon. I will take on board that advice
