I am writing to you from Ireland as I have begun to try introduce bridge into our local schools and the use of the Bridgemate Pro system was great as it gave the students an element of computer age as they were using a machine to enter the scores. With the launch of the Bridgemate III can I ask if you would keep me in mind if you hear of any clubs upgrading their systems who might be looking to sell their Bridgemate II’s many thanks for taking the time to read this.

£295 for the complete system.
Ideal for clubs wanting to upgrade from manual to wireless scoring or from BMPros to BMIIs.

I also have 2 BridgeMate Pro servers and several (20+) BridgeMate Pro handsets available. Both servers are in full working order and 10 of the handsets have been fully tested and are working. Others should work but not tested. Includes TD key for amending scores, etc.
£95 (of which £50 will be donated to our President's charity fund which, this year, is the North West Air Ambulance Service)
Perfect for small clubs still using travellers and wanting an inexpensive wireless scoring system.

All the necessary software to run can be downloaded free of cost.

A scoring device such as a laptop would be required but it doesn't need to be high spec. A Windows 10 laptop is sufficient.

Anyone of aware of any issues with this?

I reckon there are potentially GDPR and safegaurding which I hope could be overcome by having:
(a) Club policy on use of the group (e.g. for members' and club's bridge purposes only), and no pictures nor members private information (other than phone number which we need for it to work) to be posted except by the member's themselves (detail obviously needs a little fleshing out here). Policy to be published on club website. .
(b) Safegaurding: a DBS qualified group administrator. No vulnerable members (e.g. children) in the group.
(c) Make it opt in, and members agree to comply with the policy. Email OK?

Am I making this too hard, or assuming it too easy?

Hi All
I have come back to this forum after 3 years. I have one question on which I am seeking an explanation over the fairness of the HCP distributed over the 24 boards previously randomised in the dealing machine. Having done so, , a director subsequently decides to reduce the number of boards of play to say, 18 for whatever reason. When this happens, does the fairness of points received to N/S and E/W get compromised in anyway to the extent it could potentially deemed to be judged as "unfairness" , thereby potentially affecting final rankings/ percentages at the end of an 18 board session. Is there an issue here ? I would be interested to know your views particularly if there is any view from a mathematical/ scientific perspective ?

MiniBridge is used by many teachers around the world as a way to introduce newcomers to bridge, and to facilitate faster learning.

As part of our ongoing program of enhancements to support Bridge teachers, in September 2021 we released MiniBridge on RealBridge, where learners can play MiniBridge with other learners at a table with integrated audio and video.

What is MiniBridge?

You may already know how MiniBridge works, but if not, see the EBED material.
https://ebedcio.org.uk/
There are also lesson plans and prepared deals (PBN files).

In summary: the players announce how many points they have, then the side with more points becomes the declaring side. The player from the declaring side who has more points is declarer. Dummy is displayed. Declarer chooses a strain, and whether to play partscore or game. A lead is made, then play proceeds as normal.

MiniBridge on RealBridge

Before we implemented MiniBridge, naturally we talked to some of our customers first, both in the UK and internationally. There are teaching programs in most countries.

It turned out that there isn’t just one MiniBridge. Here are some of the variations we know about:

• As well as partscore or game, you can also play in slam (and in some countries grand slam).
• Minor-suit games don’t exist – only majors and notrumps.
• To make partscore in a suit, you need eight tricks, not just seven.
• The defenders can double the contract, after discussing whether they think it will make.
• When choosing the contract, declarer can’t see dummy. Instead, they just know dummy’s shape.
• The opening lead is made without seeing dummy, or even without seeing dummy’s shape.

How it works

I’ll start by describing our default variant of MiniBridge, which is slightly different from the standard EBU version. See below for how to make it exactly the same as the EBU version, or your own preferred version.

With RealBridge, you’re all in the same virtual room, with audio and video of all the other players, and the teacher. This lends itself to playing MiniBridge like you would in a classroom, with spoken communication as much as possible.

Starting with dealer, in rotation the players say out loud how many points they have. They agree which side has the most points, and which player is declarer.

When everyone is happy, the declarer clicks the “I Am Declarer” button. If they click it by mistake, they can undo.

Declarer sees a cut-down bidding box, with just one-level partscores, game contracts, and slam contracts. Declarer sees dummy’s shape, like this:

(See below for how to have dummy's full hand shown instead.)

Using this information, declarer chooses a contract.

Next, the opening leader can choose whether to double or not. The two defenders can discuss this (without saying what their hands are). When they’ve decided, leader clicks either Pass or Double.

Now the opening leader sees the dummy, before choosing a lead. Play continues as normal, just like in a standard game of bridge on RealBridge.

Distribution View

Two of the hardest, but also most important, things for beginners to do are keeping track of the cards that have been played, and understanding how the suits are distributed. To make it easier to learn these skills, we have included an optional feature, the Distribution View, where any player can see the distribution of all the hands, and how many cards have been played in each suit.

Setting it up

In RealBridge’s implementation of MiniBridge, you set up the game like a normal bridge session, except that you tick a box for MiniBridge. Then you are presented with a range of options, which let you set up the game exactly how you want it. You can specify:

• The set of contracts that are allowed. This gives you the flexibility to start simple and work up towards the full set of bridge contracts. For example, with a very new set of players you might just specify one of a suit and 1NT. Then as the players progress you might add the game contracts, then the slams, and perhaps eventually the full set of bridge contracts.
• Whether doubles are allowed. Doubles are fun, especially for younger players, but you might not want to introduce those straight away.
• Whether to include the Distribution View.
• Whether declarer sees dummy before choosing the contract, or just sees dummy’s shape.
• Some entertaining visual options, like showering the table in fireworks when you make or defeat a contract.

What next?

This is the first stage of our MiniBridge implementation. We will add more features, especially in response to user feedback.

We are also in discussion with various national bridge organizations about international MiniBridge events for juniors. International MiniBridge clubs will also help young players develop their language and communications skills.

We had a club committee meeting last night. One of the main topics was the lack of numbers at our regular sessions. We currently only get half the numbers we did pre-Covid. Having looked at other Bridge club sites this halving seems quite typical. It was suggested that there were two main reasons for members not playing at the club: a. wariness regarding Covid: b. not enough tables and the likelihood of a 3 or 4 table sit-out. The possibility was suggested that a hybrid session could be run thereby increasing the number of players and that may enable the club to survive - the view was expressed that we may not get back up to more regular numbers until next spring.
I promised to post a message on the EBU forum website to see what advice there might be regarding running a club hybrid session. It seems that while the concept may be easy to understand the practicalities might be not so easy to implement. For example, would two directors be required - one for the F2F session and the other for the on-line players (this assumes the directors would also be players)? Would extra equipment be requires at the club? Would we need robots to play? What would be the best platform to use for the on-line bridge? I'm sure there are many other factors to take into account but if anybody can help or particularly if they have experience of running a hybrid event then this would be much appreciated. Alan.
P.S. Of course, if anybody has experience of getting numbers back up (free sessions, for example) then that would also be appreciated.

Our club duplimate machine (purchsed 4 years ago, refurbished, usage 3 sets/week) is misbehaving. It gets about 60% deals wrong even with new cards - typically 14-13-13-12; this increases the dealing time enormously. Should we try getting it reparied (costs?) or decide it has had its day and get a new one (expensive!)? Any advice greatly appreciated.

I don't know if this is the right forum for this question, or whether there is a right forum, but I promised I'd ask the question:

My elderly parents have got the hang of playing in BBO games, and they've recently started playing at a club that uses Real Bridge. They've managed to play most of the boards but every now and then one of them loses connection with the game and is unable to play a few hands. It doesn't seem to be a lost broadband connection or a computer freeze, as all other functions seem to be OK (I'm diagnosing this from a distance, so I can't be sure). They have two laptops, and it's the older model that is affected, although it's far from obsolescent. They want to know if the solution is to buy another new laptop.

Does anyone know if this is a common problem, and if there are ways to minimize the risk of it happening? Does using a particular browser help? Any advice of what to try would be welcome.
